HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS
Fan screenplay by Wui-Ming Gan, based on the novel by J. K. Rowling
Chapter 22: The Wand of Destiny
INT. STAIRS, HOGWARTS - NIGHT
As HARRY hurries down the stairs, the camera focuses on several different sections of the battle, on several different duels. HARRY runs into NEVILLE, who is in the middle of a duel; HARRY helps him to overcome his opponent.
NEVILLE Thanks, Harry!
HARRY Listen, Neville. You know Voldemort's snake, Nagini? It's got to be killed. Ron and Hermione know that, but just in case the three of us are... busy, and you get the chance —
NEVILLE Kill the snake?
HARRY Yeah.
INT. SHRIEKING SHACK - NIGHT
NAGINI is slithering around VOLDEMORT's shoulders.
VOLDEMORT Why doesn't it work for me, Severus?
He is speaking to SNAPE; the two wizards and the snake are alone in the room.
SNAPE My Lord? You have performed extraordinary magic with that wand.
VOLDEMORT No. I have performed my usual magic. I am extraordinary, but this wand... it has not revealed the wonders it has promised.
SNAPE My Lord, I beg you to let me return to the castle. Let me find Potter.
INT. TUNNEL - NIGHT
Under the Cloak, HARRY is crawling through the tunnel connecting the ground below the Whomping Willow to the Shrieking Shack.
VOLDEMORT (O.S.) No. All this long night, when I am on the brink of victory, I have sat here wondering why the Wand of Destiny refuses to perform as legend says it must perform for its rightful owner... and I think I have the answer.
HARRY has reached the end of the tunnel; the opening leading into the shack has been boarded up. HARRY peers through a tiny crack.
INT. SHRIEKING SHACK - NIGHT
NAGINI has started to encase SNAPE.
SNAPE My Lord —
VOLDEMORT The wand cannot serve me properly, Severus, because I am not its true master. You killed Albus Dumbledore. While you live, Severus, the Wand of Destiny cannot be truly mine.
SNAPE's face is a death mask. VOLDEMORT hisses in Parseltongue, and NAGINI's fangs pierce SNAPE's neck.
INT. TUNNEL - NIGHT
Still under the Cloak, HARRY's eyes widen in shock.
INT. SHRIEKING SHACK - NIGHT
Wrapping the snake around his shoulders once more, VOLDEMORT turns to walk away.
