Chapter 21: The Battle of Hogwarts
INT. GREAT HALL, HOGWARTS - NIGHT
The students are gathered in the Great Hall, their eyes
fixed upon MCGONAGALL, who is speaking from the raised
platform at the top of the Hall. Behind her stand the
remaining teachers and members of the Order of the
Phoenix.
MCGONAGALL
Prefects, you will organize your
House and take your charges to the
evacuation point in an orderly
fashion.
NEVILLE
What if we want to stay and fight?
MCGONAGALL
If you are of age, you may stay.
VOLDEMORT's voice echoes throughout the Hall:
VOLDEMORT (O.S.)
I know that you are preparing to
fight. Your efforts are futile.
Give me Harry Potter, and none
shall be harmed. You have until
midnight.
MCGONAGALL
Students, you will leave now.
She turns to address the others behind her.
MCGONAGALL (cont'd)
We've only got half an hour until
midnight, so we need to act fast.
INT. CORRIDOR, HOGWARTS - NIGHT
HARRY paces along a corridor.
HARRY
Where have I seen the diadem
before?
There is a brief flashback to a scene from MOVIE 6:
INT. ROOM OF REQUIREMENT, HOGWARTS - LAST YEAR
HARRY takes a battered old tiara from a pile of junk, and
places it on the head of the bust of an old man, perched
on the cupboard in which he has just hidden his Potions
textbook.
INT. CORRIDOR, HOGWARTS - NIGHT
HARRY
Of course!
He sprints along the corridor, back toward the Room of
Requirement, running into HERMIONE and RON on the way.
HARRY (cont'd)
Where have you been? Never mind. I
think I know where the diadem is.
Come on.
EXT. ROOM OF REQUIREMENT, HOGWARTS - NIGHT
They reach the entrance to the Room of Requirement.
HARRY
I need the place where everything
is hidden!
The door shifts and morphs into the one through which
HARRY had gone to hide his Potions book in MOVIE 6.
INT. ROOM OF REQUIREMENT, HOGWARTS - NIGHT
The room is now the size of a cathedral, its towering
walls build of objects hidden by thousands of long-gone
students.
RON
Didn't he realize anyone could get
in?
HARRY
He thought he was the only one.
HERMIONE
(raising her wand)
Accio Diadem!
Once again, the Summoning Spell fails.
HARRY
Let's split up. Look for a stone
bust of an old man wearing a wig
and a tiara.
They speed off up adjacent aisles. After looking around
for awhile, HARRY finally finds the stone bust, and
removes the diadem from the statue's head.
DRACO (O.S.)
Hold it, Potter.
HARRY turns around to see DRACO, CRABBE and GOYLE
pointing wands at him.
DRACO (cont'd)
That's my wand you're holding.
HARRY
Winners, keepers, Malfoy. How come
you three aren't with Voldemort?
DRACO
We followed you, decided to bring
you to him.
HERMIONE (O.S.)
Harry?
HERMIONE appears from around the corner.
CRABBE
It's that Mudblood! Avada Kedavra!
HERMIONE dives aside, narrowly escaping the killing
blast. HARRY shoots a Stunning Spell at CRABBE, who
lurches out of the way, knocking DRACO's wand out of his
hand and out of sight beneath a mountain of broken
furniture. CRABBE and GOYLE aim at HARRY.
DRACO
Don't kill him! The Dark Lord
wants him alive —
HARRY
Expelliarmus!
GOYLE is Disarmed. DRACO jumps out of range of a Stunning
Spell from HERMIONE. RON appears at the end of the aisle
and shoots a curse at CRABBE, which narrowly misses.
CRABBE
Fiendfyrio!
Flames of abnormal size appear, mutating, forming a
gigantic pack of fiery beasts. Flaming serpents,
chimaeras and dragons rise and fall, licking up the sides
of the junk bulwarks which crumble to soot at their
touch.
HERMIONE
Aguamenti!
The jet of water that soars from the tip of her wand
evaporates in the air. Having lost control of his own
curse, CRABBE and his companions flee from the fire,
bumping into HARRY along the way. The diadem flies out of
HARRY's hands and into the demonic fire, which spits it
out. Suspended in mid-air, the diadem starts to shrivel
and melt, and a blood-like substance, dark and tarry,
leaks out from it. As the diadem is destroyed, it emits a
faint scream of pain.
HARRY seizes a pair of broomsticks from the nearest pile
of junk and throws one to RON, who pulls HERMIONE onto it
behind him. HARRY swings his leg over the second broom
and, with hard kicks to the ground, they soar up into the
air, narrowly missing the horned beak of a flaming raptor
that snaps its jaws at them. While flying through the
air, HARRY hears DRACO screaming below them.
RON
Harry, no! It's too dangerous!
But HARRY is already diving towards DRACO, whose arms are
around an unconscious GOYLE. Seeing HARRY, DRACO raises
an arm; HARRY grasps it. As DRACO clambers up behind
HARRY, GOYLE slides out of DRACO's clutch. RON has flown
down to join them.
RON (cont'd)
If we die for them, I'll kill you,
Harry!
As a flaming chimaera bears down upon them, RON and
HERMIONE drag GOYLE onto their broom and rise into the
air. The two brooms and their riders swoop through the
door and into the corridor beyond.
INT. CORRIDOR, HOGWARTS - NIGHT
HARRY and DRACO collide into the wall and fall off the
broom. RON and HERMIONE seat panting on the floor beside
GOYLE, who is still unconscious.
DRACO
Crabbe...
RON
He's dead.
HARRY, HERMIONE and RON stagger to their feet and walk
away, leaving DRACO and GOYLE slumped on the corridor
floor.
HERMIONE
That was Fiendfyre, cursed fire!
HARRY
It destroyed the diadem. That's
another Horcrux down.
RON
Now, if we can just get to the
snake —
Yells and shouts and the unmistakable noises of dueling
fill the corridor. FRED comes into view, dueling with a
Death Eater. HARRY, HERMIONE and RON simultaneously shoot
Stunning Spells at the Death Eater, who collapses.
FRED
Ron! Glad to see you're —
Suddenly, the wall of the corridor is blasted apart. When
the air has cleared, we see that FRED has been killed by
the blast.
RON
No! Fred! No!
RON kneels beside FRED, shaking his brother, and HERMIONE
goes to comfort RON. Without a word, HARRY leaves them
behind.
