Chapter 18: Only Way In

                 EXT. HOGSMEADE - EVENING

                 An unearthly scream pierces the air, wailing like a
                 siren.

                                         RON
                                (whispering)
                           Not again!

                                         HARRY
                                (whispering)
                           Run!

                 The three of them, still hidden under the Cloak, begin to
                 run down the narrow street. The screaming stops, and the
                 trio slows down in anticipation of a new menace. A cold
                 wind sweeps through the street, and light seems to be
                 sucked from the environment. Around the corner, gliding
                 noiselessly, come a large horde of dementors. The trio
                 turns around, but there are more dementors coming toward
                 them from that side. Under the Cloak, HARRY raises a
                 wand, but HERMIONE pushes his wand hand down.

                                         HERMIONE
                           There are too many of them. We
                           mustn't give away our position.

                 We switch to a top view of the street. The three of them
                 are now invisible to us, but the dementors obviously have
                 them surrounded. Then a door opens on the side of the
                 street and out comes ABERFORTH, brandishing his wand.

                                         ABERFORTH
                           Expecto Patronum!

                 A silver goat erupts from the wand and holds the
                 dementors at bay.

                                         ABERFORTH (cont'd)
                           In here, quick!

                 There is a pattering of feet through the open doorway,
                 followed by ABERFORTH, who locks the door behind him.



                 INT. HOG'S HEAD INN - EVENING

                 HARRY, HERMIONE and RON become visible again HARRY takes
                 off the Cloak.

                                         HARRY
                           Thank you. You saved our lives.



                 INT. HOG'S HEAD INN - LATER

                 The four of them are sitting at a table, having dinner.

                                         ABERFORTH
                           You bloody fools. What were you
                           thinking, coming here?

                                         HARRY
                           We need to get into Hogwarts.

                                         ABERFORTH
                           What you need to do is to get as
                           far from here as you can.

                                         HARRY
                           You don't understand. Dumbledore
                           wanted us —

                                         ABERFORTH
                           My brother wanted a lot of things.
                           Didn't do him much good, did they?

                                         HERMIONE
                           You're Professor Dumbledore's
                           brother?

                                         HARRY
                           You're Aberforth!

                                         ABERFORTH
                           Listen, Potter. You get away from
                           this school, and out of the
                           country if you can. Forget my
                           brother and his clever schemes.

                                         HARRY
                           But you're fighting too, aren't
                           you? You're in the Order of the
                           Phoenix!

                                         ABERFORTH
                           The Order is finished. You-Know
                           Who's won. It's over, and anyone
                           who's pretending different's
                           kidding themselves.

                                         HARRY
                           Well, just because you've given up
                           doesn't mean we're going to!

                 HARRY gets up and turns to leave, indicating to HERMIONE
                 and RON to do the same.

                                         HARRY (cont'd)
                           Ron, Hermione, come on. He's not
                           going to help us. We'll find a way
                           in ourselves —

                                         ABERFORTH
                           All entrances to Hogwarts are
                           heavily guarded, and all the old
                           secret passageways have been
                           blocked. There's only one way in
                           now, and it's right here.

                 HARRY turns back to look at ABERFORTH, as the latter
                 gestures toward a portrait of Ariana Dumbledore, which
                 swings open.
