Chapter 16: Gringotts
EXT. DIAGON ALLEY - MORNING
What appears to be Bellatrix Lestrange walks along Diagon Alley towards Gringotts, accompanied by a man with long and wavy hair, a thick brown beard and mustache, and heavy eyebrows. Upon closer inspection, one might vaguely recognize him as RON in disguise. Beside them, two sets of footprints disturb the snowy ground. All around are "WANTED" posters with Harry's name and picture on them.
Only in a close-up shot do we see HARRY and GRIPHOOK under the Invisibility Cloak. We realize, of course, that Bellatrix must be HERMIONE in disguise.
RON (whispering to HERMIONE) How'd you get hold of Bellatrix's hair, anyway?
HERMIONE (whispering back) She got a lot of it onto my sweater when she was torturing me.
INT. GRINGOTTS - MORNING
HARRY (no longer hidden under the Cloak), HERMIONE (still impersonating Bellatrix) and the disguised RON are crammed in the back of a cart. Seated in front of them is GRIPHOOK, controlling the cart as it twists and turns through labyrinthine passages.
GRIPHOOK We have penetrated the outer defenses. The rest is easy.
HARRY Are you sure they're not onto us?
GRIPHOOK Trust me, they haven't a clue.
A loud alarm starts to sound.
RON (sarcastically) Yeah, I believe that!
There comes a sudden rush of water towards them that throws them out of the cart and onto the side of the passageway. As soon as HERMIONE and RON touch the water, they are transformed back into their real selves. The cart is lifted up by the force of the water and thrown at them.
HERMIONE Protego!
Her Shield Charm repels the cart, which smashes onto the wall opposite them.
HERMIONE (cont'd) What was that?
GRIPHOOK The Thief's Downfall! It washes away all enchantment. We must hurry, they'll be coming after us.
With GRIPHOOK leading the way, the four of them run along the rocky passage. Turning a corner, they come face to face with a gigantic dragon tethered to the ground in front of them, barring access to a row of vaults. Upon hearing them, it rears its head toward them, emits a deafening "ROAR", opens its mouth, and spits a jet of fire that makes them cower in fright.
GRIPHOOK (cont'd) It is partially blind, but even more savage for that.
He hands HARRY a small metal instrument.
GRIPHOOK (cont'd) You know what to do. When it retreats, I will open the vault.
HARRY shakes the instrument, which makes a loud, ringing noise. The dragon retreats, and GRIPHOOK hurries to a vault door and presses his palm to the wood. The door melts away to reveal a cave-like opening crammed from floor to ceiling with treasures of all shapes and sizes. They enter, and the door reappears behind them, sealing the vault.
HARRY, HERMIONE & RON Lumos!
The tip of their wands light up.
RON Accio Horcrux!
Nothing happens.
RON (cont'd) It was worth a try.
HERMIONE Harry, could this be —
She picks up a jeweled goblet, then screams and drops it in pain. As it falls, it becomes a shower of goblets, and with a great clatter, the floor is covered in identical cups rolling in every direction.
HERMIONE (cont'd) It burned me!
GRIPHOOK Don't touch anything! Everything you touch will multiply and burn, but the copies are worthless.
But it is impossible not to brush up against anything; soon, there is scarcely room to place their feet. Then HARRY sees the golden cup of Helga Hufflepuff, up on a high shelf.
HARRY The cup of Hufflepuff! It's up there!
HERMIONE draws out the sword of Gryffindor from her bag and hands it to HARRY.
HERMIONE Here.
She points her wand at HARRY.
HERMIONE (cont'd) Levicorpus!
Hoisted into the air by his ankle, HARRY hits a suit of armor and replicas burst out of it like white-hot bodies, filling the cramped space. With screams of pain, RON, HERMIONE and GRIPHOOK are knocked aside into other objects, which also begins to replicate. Half buried in a rising tide of sizzling treasure, they struggle and yell as HARRY thrusts the sword through the handle of the cup, hooking it onto the blade. HARRY points his wand at himself.
HARRY Liberacorpus!
He falls onto the surface of the swelling treasure, and the sword flies out of HARRY's hand. He clambers toward it, but GRIPHOOK reaches the sword first, seizing its hilt and swinging it out of HARRY's reach. The cup is flung into the air. HARRY dives and catches it, and does not relinquish it even while it scalds his flesh and countless copies burst from his fist, raining down upon him. HARRY shoves the real cup into his pocket.
The entrance of the vault opens up again, and the four of them find themselves sliding uncontrollably on an expanding avalanche of fiery gold and silver bearing them into the outer chamber. GRIPHOOK sprints toward the advancing goblins, brandishing the sword.
GRIPHOOK Thieves! Thieves! Help! Thieves!
He vanishes into the midst of the crowd, all of whom are holding daggers. HARRY, HERMIONE and RON fire Stunning Spells at the goblins; some topple over, while others advance. The tethered dragon roars, and a gush of flame flies over the goblins.
HARRY This way!
Still shooting Stunning Spells at the goblins, he sprints toward the blind dragon. RON and HERMIONE follow.
HERMIONE Harry, what are you doing?
HARRY Climb up onto the dragon's back, come on!
Once they have hoisted themselves up, HARRY points his wand at the chains that bind the dragon to the ground.
HARRY (cont'd) Relashio!
The cuffs break open with a loud bang. With a "ROAR", the dragon rears and flies upward, smashing repeatedly into the ceiling. HARRY, HERMIONE and RON shoot spells at the ceiling, helping the dragon to make a hole. Its swinging tail keeps the goblins at bay.
