Chapter 14: The Wandmaker
INT. GUEST BEDROOM, SHELL COTTAGE - NIGHT
OLLIVANDER is awake in bed. There is a knock on the door.
OLLIVANDER Come in!
The door opens, and in comes HARRY.
HARRY Mr. Ollivander, I'm sorry to disturb you.
OLLIVANDER My dear boy. You rescued us. I thought we would die in that place. I can never thank you enough.
HARRY holds out the two halves of his broken wand.
HARRY Mr. Ollivander, I need some help. Can you mend this?
OLLIVANDER holds out a trembling hand, and HARRY places the two barely connected halves into his palm.
OLLIVANDER I am sorry, but a wand that has suffered this degree of damage cannot be repaired by any means that I know of.
HARRY takes the wand halves back and replaces them in his pocket, taking out two of the wands he brought from Malfoy Manor.
HARRY Can you identify these?
OLLIVANDER takes the first of the wands and holds it close to his faded eyes, rolling it between his knobble knuckled fingers, flexing it slightly.
OLLIVANDER Walnut and dragon heartstring. This wand belonged to Bellatrix Lestrange.
HARRY And this one?
OLLIVANDER performs the same examination on the other wand.
OLLIVANDER Hawthorn and unicorn hair. This was the wand of Draco Malfoy.
HARRY Was? Isn't it still his?
OLLIVANDER Perhaps not. If you took it, then it may be yours. In general, where a wand has been won, its allegiance will change.
HARRY You talk about wands like they've got feelings.
OLLIVANDER The wand chooses the wizard.
HARRY Can't a person use a wand that hasn't chosen them, though?
OLLIVANDER Oh yes, if you are any wizard at all you will be able to channel your magic through almost any instrument. The best results, however, always come where there is the strongest affinity between wizard and wand.
HARRY I took this wand from Draco Malfoy by force. Can I use it safely?
OLLIVANDER I think so. Subtle laws govern wand ownership, but the conquered wand will usually bend its will to its new master.
HARRY So, it isn't necessary to kill the previous owner to take true possession of a wand?
OLLIVANDER Necessary? No, I should not say that it is necessary to kill. But there are legends about a wand that has passed from hand to hand by murder, a wand said to be more powerful than any other.
HARRY The Wand of Destiny.
OLLIVANDER nods.
HARRY (cont'd) You told You-Know-Who about it, didn't you?
OLLIVANDER He tortured me!
HARRY What did you tell him?
OLLIVANDER A rumor. Some believe that Grindelwald — a Dark Wizard before your time — came to possess the Wand of Destiny, and used it to reach the height of his power.
HARRY Grindelwald. I've heard the name before. Dumbledore defeated him, didn't he? But that means —
EXT. LAKE, HOGWARTS - NIGHT
Beside the lake is a white marble tomb — the tomb of Albus Dumbledore. The entire tomb is lifted off the ground. In mid-air, it rotates so that the corpse within is upright. The tomb splits open from head to toe, and the wrappings fall open. Dumbledore's hands are folded upon his chest, clutching the Wand of Destiny. We hear the sound of evil, uncontrollable laughter as the wand is lifted into the air and floats into VOLDEMORT's waiting hands. VOLDEMORT is now holding a wand in each hand; he waves them, and the desecrated tomb is flung into the dark, deep waters of the lake.
