HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS
Fan screenplay by Wui-Ming Gan, based on the novel by J. K. Rowling
Chapter 12: The Deathly Hallows
INT. TENT - LATER
HARRY, HERMIONE and RON are seated in the tent.
RON How did you find out about the Taboo?
HARRY The what?
RON You and Hermione have stopped saying You-Know-Who's name.
HARRY Oh, yeah. Well, it's just a bad habit we've slipped into. But I haven't got a problem calling him —
RON No! The name's been jinxed, Harry, that's how they track people!
HERMIONE So that's how they found us so quickly in Tottenham Court Road!
HARRY Because we used his name?
HERMIONE It makes sense. The only people who ever dared use his name were people who were serious about standing up to him. Putting a Taboo on it's a quick-and-easy way to find Order members!
RON They nearly got Kingsley, but he fought his way out.
HERMIONE Speaking of which, how exactly did you find us?
RON pulls out the Deluminator from his pocket.
RON With this.
HERMIONE The Deluminator?
RON Apparently, it doesn't just turn the lights on and off. It showed me the way back to you. I guess Dumbledore knew I'd run out on you.
HARRY No, he knew you'd always want to come back.
HERMIONE Well, at least we know now that Dumbledore left us both the sword and the Deluminator for a reason.
She pulls out The Tales of Beedle the Bard and begins to flip through its pages.
HERMIONE (cont'd) I wish I knew what he wants us to do with a book of fairy tales.
Suddenly, she lets out a squeal of excitement.
HERMIONE (cont'd) Harry, look!
She thrusts the book at him. At the top of a page is the triangular sign she saw earlier in the graveyard.
HERMIONE (cont'd) That's the mark on the grave in Godric's Hollow! I knew I'd seen it before!
HERMIONE reads aloud the title under the sign, and the story that follows.
HERMIONE (cont'd) The Tale of the Three Brothers. There were once three brothers who were traveling along a lonely winding road at twilight.
EXT. A WINDING ROAD - EVENING
The three Peverell brothers are walking along the road, and the story that HERMIONE reads is enacted on screen.
HERMIONE (V.O.) In time, the brothers reached a river too deep to wade through and too dangerous to swim across. However, these brothers were learned in the magical arts, and so they simply waved their wands and made a bridge appear across the treacherous water. They were halfway across it when they found their path blocked by a hooded figure. And Death spoke to them —
INT. TENT - NIGHT
HARRY Hang on — Death spoke to them?
HERMIONE It's a fairy tale, Harry!
EXT. BRIDGE - EVENING
HERMIONE (V.O.) And Death spoke to them, and said that each had earned a prize for having been clever enough to evade him.
INT. TENT - NIGHT
HERMIONE The oldest brother asked for a wand more powerful than any in existence. The second brother asked for a stone with the power to recall others from Death. The youngest brother was the humblest and wisest of the brothers, and he asked for something that would enable him to go forth from that place without being followed by Death. And Death, most unwillingly, handed over his own Cloak of Invisibility.
EXT. BRIDGE - EVENING
The scene from the fairy tale unfolds once more on screen as HERMIONE continues the tale.
HERMIONE (V.O.) Then Death stood aside and allowed the three brothers to continue on their way. The first brother proceeded to an inn, where he boasted loudly of the powerful wand he had snatched from Death himself. That very night, another wizard crept upon the oldest brother, took the Wand of Destiny and slit the oldest brother's throat. And so Death took the first brother for his own. Meanwhile, the second brother journeyed to his own home and turned the stone thrice in his hand. To his delight, the figure of the girl he had once hoped to marry, before her untimely death, appeared at once before him. Yet she was sad and cold, separated from him as by a veil. Finally the second brother, driven mad with hopeless longing, killed himself so as truly to join her. And so Death took the second brother for his own.
INT. TENT - NIGHT
HERMIONE But though Death searched for the third brother for many years, he was never able to find him.
INT. IGNOTUS PEVERELL'S HOUSE - NIGHT
An aged IGNOTUS takes off his cloak and hands it to his SON. DEATH appears before him.
HERMIONE (V.O.) It was only when he had attained a great age that the youngest brother finally took off the Cloak of Invisibility and gave it to his son. And then he greeted Death as an old friend and, equals, they departed this life.
INT. TENT - NIGHT
HERMIONE Someone's scribbled a footnote here. (reading it) The Deathly Hallows.
HARRY The man with that mark on his grave, what was his name —
HERMIONE Ignotus Peverell.
HARRY — you don't suppose he was one of the three brothers, do you?
HERMIONE It's a fairy tale, Harry!
RON But some fairy tales are based on truth, aren't they? What if these... Peverell brothers actually created these... Deathly Hallows? I mean, we've got the Invisibility Cloak right here!
HERMIONE What about the Resurrection Stone? That can't exist!
HARRY Marvolo Gaunt! You-Know-Who's grandfather! He said he was descended from the Peverells! The ring, the ring that became the Horcrux! What if it was the Resurrection Stone?
HERMIONE No magic can raise the dead, Harry!
HARRY That night in the graveyard, when my wand connected with You-Know Who's, it made my mom and dad appear... and Cedric...
HERMIONE But they weren't really back from the dead, were they?
RON Neither was the girl in the tale.
HARRY suddenly touches his scar in pain.
EXT. NURMENGARD - NIGHT
VOLDEMORT is flying upwards, up to the topmost floor of the highest tower of the black fortress.
INT. GRINDELWALD'S CELL, NURMENGARD - NIGHT
A large chunk of the wall is blown to pieces, and there in mid-air is VOLDEMORT. Inside the cell sits an ancient looking GRINDELWALD.
GRINDELWALD Voldemort! We meet at last.
VOLDEMORT Where is it?
GRINDELWALD An old friend once told me to try for some remorse. After all these years, I think I finally —
VOLDEMORT Give it to me, old man!
GRINDELWALD Kill me if you wish! That wand will never be yours!
INT. TENT - NIGHT
HARRY That's what he's after!
RON The stone?
HARRY No, the wand!
HERMIONE Cedric was after the wand?
HARRY No, Voldemort —
At the mention of that name, RON leaps to his feet.
RON I told you, Harry, the name's Taboo! It's how they find —
The tent suddenly disintegrates around them, and they find themselves surrounded by FENRIR GREYBACK and five other Death Eaters with wands pointed at them.
