Chapter 11: The Silver Doe

INT. TENT - LATER

HERMIONE is asleep. HARRY is standing guard near the
entrance, holding Hermione's wand. A bright silver light
appears right ahead of him, moving through the trees. He
jumps to his feet, and steps out of the tent to get a
closer look.

EXT. FOREST - NIGHT

HARRY is outside the tent, raising Hermione's wand,
screwing up his eyes as the light becomes blinding. And
then the source of the light steps out from behind an oak
— it is a bright silver doe, picking her way over the
ground, still silent, and leaving no hoofprints in the
fine powdering of snow. She steps toward him, her
beautiful head held high. They gaze at each other for a
long moment, and then she turns and walks away.

HARRY
No, come back!

The doe continues to step through the trees, and HARRY
sets off in pursuit. As he follows the doe, shrinking
into the distance, we see a pair of legs and boots step
in front of the camera and move toward him, but we don't
get to see the rest of the stalker's body.

EXT. POOL IN THE FOREST - NIGHT

The doe comes to a halt on top of a small, frozen pool.
She turns her head toward HARRY, then vanishes. HARRY
approaches the pool.

HARRY
Lumos!

The wand-tip ignites, and we see the sword of Gryffindor
lying at the bottom of the forest pool.

HERMIONE (V.O.)
The sword must be taken under
conditions of need and valor!

HARRY points Hermione's wand at the ice.

HARRY
Diffindo.

The surface of the pool breaks an chunks of dark ice rock
on the ruffled water. With fumbling fingers HARRY removes
his many layers of clothing, stripping off until at last
he stands there in his underwear, barefooted in the snow.
The locket is on a chain around his neck. He places
Hermione's wand on top of his clothes, then jumps into
the pool.

INT. UNDERWATER, POOL IN THE FOREST- NIGHT

Diving, he pushes through the dark water to the bottom
and reaches out, groping for the sword. His fingers close
around the hilt and pull it upward. He accidentally
brushes the hilt of the sword against the locket, causing
it to glow eerily in the dark, and then the chain starts
to tighten around his neck. He lets go of the sword, and
scrabbles at the strangling chain, his frozen fingers
unable to loosen it. His thrashing gets less and less
violent, and his eyes fall shut.

Close-up of the sword, drifting in slow motion back to
the bottom of the pool. After what seems like eternity, a
hand appears in frame, reaching down, fingers closing
around the hilt of the sword.

EXT. POOL IN THE FOREST - MOMENTS LATER

Choking and retching, HARRY is lying facedown in the
snow. The locket is gone from his neck. We don't see his
savior until we hear the voice...

RON (O.S.)
Are — you — mental?

Shivering violently, HARRY staggers to his feet. There
before him stands RON, fully dressed but drenched to the
skin, his hair plastered to his face, the sword of
Gryffindor in one hand and the locket dangling from its
broken chain in the other. It was RON's pants and boots
that we saw earlier, when he was following HARRY.

RON (cont'd)
Why the hell didn't you take this
thing off before you dived?

HARRY starts to put on his clothes.

HARRY
You cast that doe?

RON
What? No, of course not! I thought
that was you!

Pulling on a final sweater, HARRY stoops to pick up
Hermione's wand, and faces RON again.
They both look at the ornate sword, its rubied hilt
glinting in the light from Hermione's wand.

RON (cont'd)
You reckon this is the real one?

HARRY
One way to find out, isn't there?

He looks around, holding Hermione's wand up high, and
sees a flattish rock lying in the shadow of a sycamore
tree.

HARRY (cont'd)
Come here.

HARRY leads RON to the place, and brushes snow from the
rock's surface. RON places the locket on the rock. When
RON offers HARRY the sword, the latter shakes his head.

HARRY (cont'd)
No, you should do it.

RON
Me? Why?

HARRY
Because you got the sword out of
the pool. I think it's supposed to
be you. I'm going to open it, and
you stab it.

RON looks terrified.

RON
How are you going to open it?

HARRY
This is the locket of Salazar
Slytherin. I'm betting it responds
to Parseltongue. On three. One...
two... three... Herssstrasssa!

The last word, a strangled hissing noise, is the same
word in Parseltongue that HARRY had used to open the
Chamber of Secrets in MOVIE TWO. The golden doors of the
locket swing wide with a little click. Behind each of the
glass windows within, there blinks a living eye.

HARRY (cont'd)
Stab.

RON raises the sword in his shaking hands. Its point
dangles over the frantically swiveling eyes. Then,
VOLDEMORT's voice hisses out from the locket.

VOLDEMORT (V.O.)
I have seen your dreams, Ronald
Weasley, and I have seen your
fears.

HARRY
Stab!

VOLDEMORT (V.O.)
Least loved by the mother who
craved a daughter... Least loved
by the girl who prefers your
friend...

HARRY
Ron, stab it now!

Out of the eyes bloom, like two grotesque bubbles, the
heads of HARRY and HERMIONE, weirdly distorted. The
figures blossom out of the locket up to their waists,
swaying over RON and the real HARRY like trees with a
common root.

LOCKET-HARRY
Your mother confessed that she
would have preferred me as a
son...

LOCKET-HERMIONE
Who wouldn't prefer him? You are
nothing, nothing to him.

The two figures stretch like snakes and entwine
themselves around each other. Their lips meet. RON's face
fills with anguish. He raises the sword high, his arms
shaking.

HARRY
Do it, Ron!

The sword plunges. There is a clang of metal and a long,
drawn-out scream. There stands RON with the sword held
slackly in his hand, looking down at the shattered
remains of the locket on the flat rock. The eyes are
gone, and the stained silk lining of the locket is
smoking slightly. The sword clangs as RON drops it.

RON
I'm sorry I left.

HARRY
You sort of made up for it
tonight.

They hug each other, and the sun starts to rise.

EXT. FOREST - MORNING

HARRY and RON approach the tent, and then enter it.

INT. TENT - MORNING

HARRY bends over HERMIONE, who is still fast asleep.

HARRY
Hermione... Hermione... Hermione!

She stirs, then sits up quickly, pushing her hair out of
her face.

HERMIONE
What's wrong, Harry?

RON comes out from behind HARRY. HERMIONE slides out of
her bunk and moves like a sleepwalker toward RON, her
eyes upon his pale face. She stops right in front of him,
her lips slightly parted, her eyes wide. RON gives a
weak, hopeful smile and half raises his arms. HERMIONE
launches herself forward and starts punching him.

HERMIONE (cont'd)
You — complete — arse — Ronald —
Weasley! You crawl back here after
weeks and weeks —

Her shouts eventually turn into sobs, and her punches
into an embrace.
