Chapter 9: The Goblin's Revenge
EXT. FOREST - DAY
HARRY, HERMIONE and RON appear in the middle of a forest.
RON Where are we?
HERMIONE In the woods where they held the Quidditch World Cup. Harry, we can't go back to Grimmauld Place now!
HARRY I know.
HERMIONE He followed me there, I'm sorry —
HARRY It's not your fault, Hermione.
RON What are we going to do now?
HARRY Let's stay here and rest.
HERMIONE I'll put some protective enchantments around the place. Harry, could you get the tent out of my bag?
She walks away from HARRY and RON. HARRY takes HERMIONE's handbag, opens it, and peers inside. It seems to be filled with an endless supply of books. Frustrated, he raises his wand.
HARRY Accio Tent!
A lumpy mass of canvas, rope and poles leaps up from the bag and erects itself on the ground. HARRY and RON crawl into the tent.
INT. TENT, FOREST - DAY
The interior of the tent is enormous, complete with bathroom and kitchen. HARRY and RON settle into armchairs. HERMIONE enters a moment later.
HERMIONE I used all the charms I know. At the very least, we should know they're coming. I can't guarantee it will keep out Vol —
RON Don't say the name! I'm sorry, but it feels like a jinx or something.
HARRY Dumbledore said fear of a name —
RON Calling You-Know-Who by his name didn't do Dumbledore much good in the end, did it?
HERMIONE Well, at least we have the locket.
She pulls the locket out of a pocket of her robes.
HERMIONE (cont'd) Now we have to figure out how to destroy it.
FADE TO:
EXT. FOREST - DAY
Summer has turned into fall, and the forest is a collage of red, yellow, orange and brown. In the distance, we see HARRY, HERMIONE and RON moving among the trees.
FADE TO:
INT. TENT - NIGHT
HERMIONE is sitting on the floor, surrounded by open books and reading one. RON is sleeping, while HARRY sits on another bed, turning the locket over in his hands.
FADE TO:
EXT. RIVER BANK - DAY
HARRY, HERMIONE and RON are walking alongside the river.
FADE TO:
INT. KITCHEN, TENT - EVENING
Three small fish lie in a frying pan over a fiery stove.
RON (O.S.) We've had nothing but fish and berries for weeks!
INT. TENT - MOMENTS LATER
HERMIONE is walking out of the kitchen with three tin plates, a charred fish on each. She hands a plate each to RON and HARRY.
RON If only my mom were here — I bet she could conjure us a good meal.
HERMIONE I told you, Ron — it's impossible to make food appear out of nothing. You can Summon it if you know where it is, you can increase the quantity if you've already got some —
RON Well, don't bother increasing this, it's disgusting.
HERMIONE I haven't seen you helping with the cooking, Ronald —
HARRY Be quiet! I hear someone.
The sound of distant footsteps and voices becomes more and more distinct.
HARRY (cont'd) (whispering to HERMIONE) The tent is shielded, right?
HERMIONE (whispering back) They shouldn't be able to hear or see us while we're inside.
EXT. FOREST BY THE RIVER BANK - EVENING
The tent has been pitched on a narrow bank between a wide river and a forest. TED TONKS, DEAN THOMAS, and a goblin, GRIPHOOK come into view, walking through the trees, and their conversation becomes intelligible.
TED — refused to register as a Muggle born, and decided to run for it. My wife should be okay, she's pure blood. And then I met Dean here a few days ago. By the way, Dean, did you hear about the kids who tried to steal Gryffindor's sword out of Snape's office at Hogwarts?
DEAN No, who was it?
TED Ginny Weasley and a couple of her friends. Snape caught them in the act, decided the sword wasn't safe where it was, and sent it down to London to be kept in Gringotts instead.
GRIPHOOK laughs.
TED (cont'd) What's the joke, Griphook?
GRIPHOOK The sword they gave us was a fake. The original was forged centuries ago by goblins. Wherever the genuine sword of Gryffindor is, it is not in a vault at Gringotts Bank.
DEAN What happened to Ginny and the others?
INT. TENT - EVENING
TED (O.S.) I heard they got away from Snape and disappeared. I hope they went into hiding, because the alternative —
TED, DEAN and GRIPHOOK have moved out of earshot.
HARRY Ginny... the sword...
HERMIONE Harry, the sword can destroy Horcruxes!
HARRY What? How do you —
HERMIONE You heard what they said — the sword of Gryffindor was made by goblins. Goblin blades imbibe that which strengthen them. Harry, that sword's impregnated with basilisk venom!
HARRY Of course! Basilisk venom destroyed the diary, and I stabbed the basilisk with the sword! That's why Dumbledore wanted me to have it!
HERMIONE He replaced the sword in his office with a fake, and left the real one somewhere for you to find! The question is, where?
HARRY What do you reckon, Ron?
RON Oh, remembered me, have you? You two carry on. Don't let me spoil your fun.
There is a pattering on the canvas above them as raindrops start to fall.
HARRY Ron, what's wrong?
RON I just hoped, you know, after we'd been running round a few weeks, we'd have achieved something.
HARRY We've found one Horcrux —
RON And we're nowhere effing near getting rid of it or finding the rest of them!
HERMIONE (quietly) Ron.
HARRY I thought you knew what you'd signed up for.
RON We thought you knew what you were doing! We thought you had a plan!
HERMIONE Ron!
RON Didn't you hear what they said about my sister? But you don't give a rat's fart, do you? You don't have a family to worry about —
HARRY My family is dead!
RON And mine could be going the same way!
HARRY Then go! Go back to them, so Mommy can feed you!
RON glares at HARRY, then storms over to the opening of the tent. There, he stops and turns to HERMIONE.
RON Are you staying, or what?
HERMIONE Ron, we said we'd go with Harry —
RON I get it. You choose him.
He leaves the tent. HERMIONE runs after him.
HERMIONE Ron, no — please — come back!
EXT. TENT, RIVER BANK - NIGHT
HERMIONE runs out into the rain, which is now coming down in full force. RON is nowhere to be seen.
HERMIONE Ron! Ron!
The camera pulls away, and we soon have an aerial view of the landscape. Lightning flashes through the sky. As the camera pans around, the rain slowly turns into snow. Eventually, a snow-covered Hogwarts moves into view.
