Chapter 8: Magic is Might
EXT. GRIMMAULD PLACE - MORNING
It is windy. As the camera closes in on the road, a
strong gust of wind blows a newspaper into view. The
headline on the front page is "MUGGLE-BORNS REQUIRED TO
REGISTER", and underneath it is a black-and-white picture
of DOLORES UMBRIDGE, wearing the locket of Slytherin
around her neck. The camera pushes into the picture, and
it turns into a full-color scene...
INT. MINISTRY OF MAGIC - DAY
Cameras flashing at her, UMBRIDGE is issuing a statement.
UMBRIDGE
As the head of the Muggle-born
Registration Commission, I,
Dolores Umbridge, am issuing an
invitation to every Muggle-born to
present themselves for interview.
The Ministry is determined to root
out all usurpers of magical power,
and to this end —
The camera pans to one side and shows YAXLEY speaking to
other reporters.
YAXLEY
— to this end, attendance at
Hogwarts School is now compulsory
for every young witch and wizard
born into a Wizarding family in
Britain. Muggle-borns with no
proven Wizarding ancestry will be
sent to a separate educational
facility operated by the Ministry.
The camera closes in on a picture of Hogwarts on the
wall, then pulls out...
EXT. GRIMMAULD PLACE - DAY
The picture of Hogwarts is now a black-and-white
photograph in the newspaper, below a headline: "HOGWARTS
TO REMAIN OPEN". Nudged by the wind, the page turns,
revealing another headline: "SEVERUS SNAPE CONFIRMED AS
HEADMASTER", and the camera pushes into the black-and
white photograph of SNAPE below the headline, which turns
into a full-color scene...
INT. GREAT HALL, HOGWARTS - NIGHT
SNAPE is addressing the students.
SNAPE
Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts.
As your new headmaster, I, Severus
Snape, would like to introduce two
new members of the staff.
Following the disappearance of the
previous Muggle Studies teacher,
Alecto Carrow will take over the
post while her brother, Amycus,
fills the position of Defense
Against the Dark Arts professor.
The Carrows will also be in charge
of all disciplinary matters at the
school.
Among the sea of students in the Hall, GINNY WEASLEY,
LUNA LOVEGOOD and NEVILLE LONGBOTTOM are seated by each
other.
LUNA
The Carrows are Death Eaters,
aren't they?
NEVILLE
We can't let the Death Eaters take
over Hogwarts. I say it's time for
Dumbledore's Army to rise again.
INT. SEVENTH FLOOR CORRIDOR, HOGWARTS
GINNY, LUNA and NEVILLE are hurrying down the corridor
with a few other students.
GINNY
How are we going to keep Snape and
the Carrows out of the Room of
Requirement? Umbridge was able to
get in, the last time.
NEVILLE
Maybe we just need to be a little
more specific.
They stop in front of the section of the wall where the
Room of Requirement is hidden.
NEVILLE (cont'd)
We need a hideout where Snape and
the Carrows and anyone who
supports them can't get in.
A door opens on the wall, different from the one that
Dumbledore's Army used two years ago. The three young
leaders smile.
GINNY
Brilliant!
EXT. ALLEYWAY - MORNING
The sun comes up from behind a cloud. MAFALDA HOPKIRK is
walking down a narrow alleyway, humming a little tune.
All of a sudden, a Stunning Spell hits her in the chest,
and she topples over. In front of her, RON and HERMIONE
becomes visible as RON takes the Invisibility Cloak off
them.
RON
Nice one, Hermione.
INT. EMPTY THEATER - MORNING
HERMIONE and RON drag MAFALDA beside two Ministry wizards
lying unconscious on the bare floor — REG CATTERMOLE and
ALBERT RUNCORN. HARRY is standing guard.
HERMIONE
I don't like this, Harry. The
Ministry of Magic is probably one
of the most dangerous places for
us to be right now.
HARRY
We've been skulking around the
Ministry entrance for a month. The
longer we put it off, the farther
away that locket could be.
Each of them pluck a few strands of hair from one of
their captives — HARRY from ALBERT, RON from REG, and
HERMIONE from MAFALDA.
HARRY (cont'd)
Hermione, do you have the
Polyjuice Potion?
The camera closes in on the three unconscious Ministry
workers.
INT. ATRIUM, MINISTRY OF MAGIC - MORNING
A green flame illuminates one of the many fireplaces that
surround the Atrium, into which MAFALDA, REG and ALBERT
appear. Of course, they are really HERMIONE, RON and
HARRY in disguise, and when they speak, it is with their
real voices.
RON
We did it! We're in the Ministry.
Wide shot of the Atrium. In the center of the Atrium is a
gigantic black sculpture of a witch and a wizard sitting
on mounds of carved humans, twisted and pressed together.
We cut back to the trio, still standing where they came
in.
HARRY
All right, guys. Remember to stay
in character.
The trio emerges from the fireplace and joins the stream
of witches and wizards moving toward the golden gates at
the end of the hall. YAXLEY, a Ministry official and also
a Death Eater, approaches them.
YAXLEY
Morning, Albert. Mafalda. I see
that you're escorting Cattermole
to his wife's interrogation.
(to RON)
In fact, I'm quite surprised
you're not already down there
holding her hand. Be sure and
marry a pureblood next time!
INT. COURTROOM, MINISTRY OF MAGIC - MORNING
This is a much smaller courtroom than the one Harry was
interrogated in two years ago. On a raised platform sits
UMBRIDGE with a sheaf of papers in her hand. In the
middle of the floor beneath the platform sits MARY
CATTERMOLE, shackled and bound.
UMBRIDGE
Mary Elizabeth Cattermole, married
to Reginald Cattermole of the
Magical Maintenance Department.
Where is your husband?
MARY
I don't know, Reg was supposed to
meet me —
UMBRIDGE
No matter, we will proceed with
the hearing without him. A wand
was taken from you upon your
arrival at the Ministry, Mrs.
Cattermole. Tell me, from whom did
you steal that wand?
MARY
(stammering)
Steal? I bought it when I was
eleven years old! It chose me.
UMBRIDGE
I don't think so, Mrs. Cattermole.
Wands only choose witches or
wizards, and as far as I've been
able to determine, there isn't a
drop of Wizarding blood in you.
Unless you can prove that you are
related to a witch or wizard —
The door opens, and in walk HERMIONE and RON. HERMIONE
closes the door behind her.
MARY
Reg! Reg, I knew you'd come for
me!
UMBRIDGE
Reginald Cattermole, I'm so glad
you made it in time for the
sentencing! Thank you, Mafalda.
HERMIONE points to the locket around UMBRIDGE's neck.
HERMIONE
That's a pretty locket, Dolores.
UMBRIDGE
What? Oh yes, an old family
heirloom. I come from a long line
of pure-bloods, you know.
She turns back to face MARY.
UMBRIDGE (cont'd)
A pity that the same cannot be
said for the Mudblood —
HARRY (O.S.)
Stupefy!
There is a flash of red light, and UMBRIDGE crumples to
the ground. Beside HERMIONE and RON, HARRY becomes
visible as he takes off his Cloak, wand in hand.
HARRY (cont'd)
Hermione, get the Horcrux. Ron,
see if you can get her out of
those chains. Meet me right
outside the courtroom.
HARRY opens the door and leaves. RON runs over to MARY
and points his wand at the chains that binds her to her
chair.
RON
Diffindo!
Nothing happens.
MARY
Reg, I don't understand —
RON
I'm not your husband. Relashio!
The chains clink and withdraw into the arms of the chair.
INT. DUNGEON, MINISTRY OF MAGIC - MORNING
The door to the dungeon (which, like the courtroom of the
previous scene, is in the basement) is grinding open.
From the doorway, HARRY calls to the confused prisoners
inside.
HARRY
Follow me.
INT. BASEMENT CORRIDOR, MINISTRY OF MAGIC - MORNING
The prisoners spill out of the dungeon and into the
corridor. Nearby, HERMIONE, RON and MARY are coming out
through the courtroom door and into the same corridor.
INT. ATRIUM, MINISTRY OF MAGIC
Still disguised as Ministry workers, HARRY, HERMIONE, and
RON lead the freed prisoners through the Atrium.
HARRY
Get to the fireplaces! Hurry!
YAXLEY bursts through the Atrium.
YAXLEY
Albert! Mafalda! What's going on?
HARRY
Dolores Umbridge had a change of
heart. She, oh no —
The three imposters transform back into their real
selves.
RON
Bloody hell!
The three of them sprint towards the nearest fireplace,
and YAXLEY runs after them.
YAXLEY
Imposters!
HARRY, HERMIONE and RON jump into a fireplace together.
Lunging at them, YAXLEY catches hold of HERMIONE's robes,
and the four of them disappear in a burst of green flame.
INT. SIRIUS' HOUSE - DAY
HARRY, HERMIONE, RON and YAXLEY appear inside the house.
HERMIONE and YAXLEY whip out their wands at exactly the
same time. HERMIONE shoots out a spell that knocks him
aside, while a spell from his wand narrowly misses RON.
HERMIONE grabs HARRY and RON's hands, and they vanish.
